What I try to build

Four things every session works toward

Confidence

Believing you can improve is what makes the next step possible — we build that belief with small, provable wins.

Curiosity

Asking why a method works, not just how to use it, so maths starts to make sense rather than needing to be memorised.

Resilience

Sticking with a hard problem for one more minute is a skill in itself — one every session quietly practises.

Growth

A wrong answer is data, not a verdict — mistakes are the fastest route to understanding, not something to hide from.

Why MathsHawk exists

"I can't do maths" is a sentence, not a fact.

It's one of the only subjects people are allowed to say they're simply bad at — out loud, proudly, at dinner parties. Nobody says that about reading.

I tutor children from primary through to A Level, and adults who were failed by that culture years ago and want to come back to maths on their own terms. Same starting point either way: find the gap, not the fault, and build from there.

Who this is for

Tutoring for four different starting points

Primary & KS3

Years 3 to 9. No tiers, no target grades — just finding where it stopped making sense and building back from there.

See primary & KS3 tutoring →

GCSE Maths

Foundation and Higher tier, mapped to what's actually on your specification — with past-paper practice that builds toward a target grade.

See GCSE tutoring →

A Level Maths

Pure, Mechanics and Statistics support that closes the gap between GCSE and the jump in pace and abstraction A Level demands.

Adult Learners

No exam required. For anyone rebuilding number confidence for work, further study, or the plain satisfaction of finally getting it.

In students' words

Feedback from students I've taught

"I was so worried that going into Year 11 I'd have a maths teacher who didn't care enough to slow down when I needed it. Luckily, you made sure that nightmare didn't come true, and I was given the best conditions possible to succeed."

— Year 11 student

"Thank you! Year 12 is undoubtedly a difficult year, and you've made maths enjoyable and given me clarity on many complicated topics."

— Year 12 student

"Toby's enthusiasm for the subject is infectious, and he has a real talent for finding different, often lateral, ways to explain concepts until something finally clicks."
