You were never "just not a maths person."
Whatever put you off maths years ago — a bad year with a teacher, a school that moved too fast, a culture that made it socially fine to opt out — none of it means the door is shut. This is tutoring without a syllabus hanging over it: your pace, your goals.
Common reasons people come to this
- A qualification like GCSE resits or Functional Skills for work or further study
- Confidence with everyday numbers: budgeting, percentages, interest, statistics in the news
- Supporting a child through their own maths homework without the old anxiety resurfacing
- Simply wanting to understand something that was never properly explained the first time
How sessions are different
No timed tests unless you want them. No assumption you should already know something. We start with what's genuinely useful or interesting to you, and build outward — often starting with the exact topic that caused the shutdown originally, explained in a completely different way.
The gap was in the teaching, not in you.
Most adults who "can't do maths" hit one specific concept, at one specific age, that was never re-explained. Find that concept, and the rest tends to follow faster than people expect.
What we can work toward
A qualification, a specific work requirement, helping with a child's homework with confidence, or no formal goal at all — just wanting maths to stop feeling like a locked room.

What one adult learner said
"I would highly recommend Toby to any adult student looking to build their confidence and understanding in maths. Toby's enthusiasm for the subject is infectious, and he has a real talent for finding different, often lateral, ways to explain concepts until something finally clicks.
Toby is patient, empathetic and kind, never making you feel embarrassed about getting something wrong or asking questions. At the same time, lessons are energetic and engaging, which makes learning maths feel much less daunting, and actually so much fun!
What really stood out to me is Toby's ability to adapt his teaching to my specific needs. He took the time to understand how I thought, and then found explanations that really worked for me. I've found this has not only improved my maths skills but also given me much more confidence in my own ability.
A fantastic tutor who genuinely cares about his students and loves what he does."
